Accessibility

Here at PS Academy Arizona, we take accessibility seriously. Whether visitors to our website are using assistive devices like screen readers, visiting on a mobile device, or a regular desktop computer, our goal is for all visitors to have an optimal experience while surfing our site.

Our website has been optimized for accessibility using the following technical implementations.

NAVIGATABLE WEBSITE

Our entire site is keyboard navigable. Our site includes a helpful sitemap from which all published pages can be accessed via the keyboard.

PAGE TITLES

As page titles are so important for orientation, we have ensured every page has a title that introduces its topic or purpose, and differentiates it from other pages on our site. We have also added page descriptions to indicate the pages content in organic results.

HEADINGS

As screen readers scan pages for HTML tags to understand their structure and allows them to navigate quickly between sections, we are using the heading field in the text editor to structure our text.

SPACING

We have ensured text on pages has adequate line spacing using the following guidelines:

  • Line spacing should be at least 1.5 times the font size.

  • Spacing following the paragraphs is at least two times the font size.

LINKS OPTIMIZATION

The purpose of each link can be determined from the link text alone, indicating to the user where the page will take them upon clicking (instead of linking “click here” text, the linked text is contextual, such as “learn more about us.”

SOCIAL SHARING

In addition to social icons, we have included text links to our social media accounts, stating the name of the social media platform in the link text to identify the link’s purpose.

IMAGE OPTIMIZATION USING ALT TAGS

As we know screen readers identify images and read the descriptive text (alt text), we have optimized image tags to indicate the context of the image.

  • We consider the purpose of the image and try to convey that meaning concisely using text.

  • We keep our alt text under 125 characters and are as concise as possible

  • Clickthrough URL’s click-through function is described. For example: "Inquire Now. Links to Inquiry page."

  • For images that require detailed descriptions, like charts, graphs, or complex graphics, we include a description of the image nearby in the text

AUDIO OPTIMIZATION

We help visitors with hearing impairments access our audio content by adding a transcript.

VIDEO OPTIMIZATION

We add synchronized captions using the integrated closed captioning features for YouTube and Vimeo. This way, viewers can enable or disable captions from within the Video Block.

COLORS

We pair colors that maximize contrast, and avoid grouping colors that are difficult to differentiate with color blindness, like blue and purple. In cases where colors cannot be changed, we use text, alt text, and other contextual information to help visitors with color blindness understand content explained through color.

FOCUS OUTLINE

Our website is built in the Squarespace CMS, which has a built-in focus outline feature that highlights items on a page, like navigation links and form fields. The outline appears when site visitors press Tab on their keyboard.
