Play Time at Pieceful Solutions School

Each day every student will attend each of the “classes” and receive direct instruction described below.  Each class is approximately 30 minutes.

The ABLLS (The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills is an assessment, curriculum guide, and skills tracking form for children with autism and other developmental disabilities (Partington, J. Ph.D., BCBA 2008). The ABLLS contains a task analysis of many skills necessary to communicate successfully and to learn from everyday experiences.  More information can be found on www.behavioranalysts.com. Each student at Pieceful Solutions will be enrolled on WebABLLS in which parents, teachers, therapists, etc. will all have the ability to share student data with authorized team members. It will also be used for the selection of educational objectives as well as tracking and documenting progress in skills acquisition. To see how the WEBABLLS works click here for a presentation from Behavior Analysts.

Pieceful Solutions will have a theme of the month.  Themes may include, but are not limited to circus, zoo, farm, transportation, seasons and holidays.

Students will be grouped in "classes" of 4 children and will be grouped based on functional level and language model support needs.

Music and Movement (M and M)
Music and movement will be done first thing in the morning involving all students. Curriculum is created by certified special education teacher. M and M is created to increase language skills and imitation. Songs and activities are based on the monthly themes. ABLLS skills worked on but not limited to, motor imitation such as foot/leg and hand/arm movements, imitation with objects, imitation of actions, imitation of speed, sound imitation, word imitation and imitation of short/fast, loud/soft, low/high words. Intraverbal skills such as filling in words to a song.

Sensory
Sensory integration plays a crucial role in the regulation of each student’s sensory system to allow them to learn better. When in the sensorimotor lab students learn to regulate his or her own arousal state.  Through active involvement children can explore and select those activities that provides a sensory experience most beneficial to them. Through active involvement and exploration the child can become a more efficient organizer of sensory information. Sensory integration is the process by which the brain organizes and interprets sensory experiences such as touch, movement, body awareness, sight, and sound. It is sensory integration that provides a crucial foundation for more complex learning and behavior. Pieceful Solutions and the O.T. will use "How Does Your Engine Run?" - The Alert Program for Self Regulation as well as the Sensory Profile to help determine each child's unique sensory needs. Science curriculum and experiments will also be a part of the sensory class.

Fine Motor

Based on the time-tested Orton-Gillingham method of reading instruction, the Institute for Multi-Sensory Education (IMSE) offers a revised and expanded multi-sensory approach that provides students the opportunity for success and benefits every learner. For over a decade this research-validated approach has been successfully implemented by teachers to empower children at all three tiers of instruction to dramatically reduce reading failure.

IMSE programs provide the essential five components of an effective reading program as stipulated by the NICHD and the National Reading Panel and supported by the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act:

  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Phonics
  • Vocabulary Development
  • Fluency
  • Comprehension Strategies

IMSE  delivers explicit instruction in these key areas, while utilizing and strengthening all learning pathways through our unique multi-sensory approach. In addition, teachers will be provided with ongoing assessment and progress monitoring tools necessary to quickly and continuously evaluate each student’s individual needs.
